on the vine

I just finished reading "Falling Leaves: The Memoir of an Unwanted Chinese Daughter" by Adeline Yen Mah for my book club.  It's a thought provoking and painful autobiography of Yen Mah's life within the Chinese history.  So very interesting, as it weaves together a harsh and abusive step-mother and her step-children, along with her own two kids, and the constant struggle for acceptance and love.

I came across this article by Amy Chua titled "Why Chinese Mothers are Superior."  {in the WSJ}  Have you read it?  I highly recommend -- it will get your wheels turning.  What are your thoughts?

  1. I've added this book to my list of books to read. Thanks for including the link to Amy Chua's article. I'm interested in reading her book too. Considering all of the discussion about education in America, I felt her article was very timely. I agree that Western parents in general do not seem to have very high expectations for their children. I'll be thinking about this for a while and be grateful that it's too late for me to feel I should be hounding my children. Thanks again.

  2. Rhonda,

Did Jenny tell me you were using GoodReads? I have heard so many good things about it, I should sign up!!

I want to read Tiger Mom too!! I thought at first it was a little offensive, but now I really do agree, in some ways, to what she is saying! And I am just starting my journey :) Plus, from what I know, you have raised some pretty amazing kids :)

Thanks so much, you are so very sweet! Can't wait to really meet in December!! :)
